Gap Credit Card Review: Everything You Need to Know (Updated 2022)

Dec 08, 2023 By Triston Martin

You may apply for the Gap credit card by VISA to obtain points on your clothing purchases. Regardless of how often your wardrobe is refreshed, the card can make it easy to earn rewards. Because the Gap credit card is a Visa card, you may also use it for non-Gap transactions. For devoted Gap customers, here are the specifics of the benefits and advantages offered by the card.

Gap Credit Card: What's the Minimum Score?

Gap provides two credit cards, as do many other well-known clothing brands and other consumer goods. Gap offers two types of credit cards: a store card that can be used at any Gap store and a Visa card that can be used everywhere Visa is accepted. As with other store cards, you have a greater chance of being approved for the regular version if you've had credit issues in the past or don't yet have established credit.

However, if you have a credit score in the lower 600s, you may be eligible for a Gap store card, but not for a Gap Visa card. On the other hand, other reward credit cards need credit scores in the 700s or above. Complete and submit the Gap credit card application online to see whether you've been accepted or declined for one of the two Gap credit cards. You should receive an answer in a matter of minutes. If you don't qualify for the Visa, you may be given the Gap store version of the card.

What is the GapCard Reward Program?

Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta receive 5x points for every dollar spent, but the Visa card also gives 1x points per dollar spent on all other transactions.

Purchases bought in-store or online, such as at,, or even Baby Gap, will earn you points. For every 500 points you make, you'll receive $5 off your next Gap purchase.

Become a Gap Silver Member Faster and Get Additional Perks.

Other perks and advantages offered by the Gap Credit Card may interest customers. Earning 5,000 points in a year qualifies you for Gap Silver membership, with perks including 20 percent extra points each quarter, free shipping at Gap, free basic adjustments at the Banana Republic, and an exclusive customer support number.

Cardholders of the Gap and Gap Factory shops or online at or get access to exclusive bargains, pre-sales, and benefits only available to cardholders, like special birthday savings and 10% Tuesdays. You won't find these incentives and offers for Gap shopping on many other credit cards.

GapCard Sign-Up Bonus for New Customers

New Gap credit cards receive a 15% discount on their first transaction. It's possible to save a significant amount of money by purchasing enormous school or infant clothing from Gap or any of its partners. If you agree to receive SMS alerts and sign up for paperless billing, you can earn an additional 1,000 points worth $10 at Gap. However, compared to the sign-up incentives that many other cash back rewards credit cards offer new users, none of these benefits is outstanding.

U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature and Discover regularly give new customers promotional deals for hundreds of dollars. Even while you must satisfy a spending restriction in the first three months of your account opening to qualify for these benefits, you aren't limited to only Gap locations when earning or redeeming them.

Experiences for Cardholders

The Gap Visa card is not maintained by Gap, Inc., as with other store-branded credit cards. Instead, Synchrony Bank, a primary credit card provider, provides the service. Unfortunately, Synchrony isn't known for its customer service. Out of 11 credit card issuers, Synchrony was placed 10th in customer satisfaction in J.D. Power's Credit Card Satisfaction Study.

Synchrony was ranked 788th out of 809 major credit card issuers. Call 800-887-1198 to speak with a representative from Synchrony's customer care department. You may also communicate with a customer service professional through your account site by live chat.

Paying Off Your Credit Card Debt

Even though neither Gap credit card costs an annual fee, they both feature high APRs, typical of most shop credit cards. This is not unusual.

If you pay your debt in full each month instead of rolling it over from month to month, this becomes less of a concern. If this is the case, it's better to forsake rewards programs and other perks favoring a low-interest rate credit card.

Is the GapCard Right for Me?

It's possible to start developing your credit history using shop cards even if you've had credit troubles in the past or don't currently have any established credit accounts. Gap's store credit card has a greater probability of approval than Discover it, U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature, or Citi Double Cash, depending on your credit score.

However, if you decide to use the GapCard, you must pay your debt in full each month to prevent accruing interest. Your incentives and perks will likely be nullified by accruing interest when you carry a balance month after month.
